pro supports our Asian American and Pacific Islander community members

To the pro community,

I’m writing to bring to your attention to two opportunities to support our Asian American and Pacific Islander community members.

My son and I will be attending a vigil in Portland later today to stand against anti-Asian violence following the recent shocking events against AAPI people both close to home and far from Maine. The event is being held at 5:15 p.m. at Payson Park and is organized by Unified Asian Communities, the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center, and Portland Public Schools.

The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine is hosting a virtual panel discussion from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday entitled “Racism Is A Virus: A Conversation with Asian American Youth in Maine.” The discussion aims to highlight and raise awareness about the Asian American experience in Maine. More information is available on the .

We were all alarmed and outraged by recent events including the mass shootings of six women of Asian descent in Georgia and the harassment of a woman of Asian descent and her children in Portland, which police are investigating as a hate crime. We know that these acts are not singular, especially in the wake of the recent pandemic.

pro stands in solidarity with and expresses its unwavering support of AAPI members of our community and beyond. We condemn racism, violence and expressions of hate and discrimination in all forms.

We pride ourselves on having a diverse population of students who come from across the country and around the globe. We value every member of our community no matter your race, color or national origin.

If you are in need of support, we encourage you to contact the Office of Student Life at 207-741-5967 or deanofstudents@smccME.edu, or utilize our counseling services through the Sweetser Promise Line at 800-434-3000.

We encourage you to view our Anti-Asian Hate webpage, /antiasianhate, which includes resources to learn more about and support the AAPI community.

I welcome you to join my commitment to fostering a safe and welcoming environment while condemning these acts of cowardice, racism and intolerance.

With respect for all,

Joe Cassidy
